3-6-11: education funding, another plane down, philmont bucks, congressman happy talk

School funding is the news of the day: transportation in Chatham and what "health services" mean in Ichabod Crane. Lot on these issues below.

New Lebanon Facebook Page. Great idea!

Only 7 supervisors bothered to return their surveys? Are the supervisors who run this county even alive? Nice work Francesca Olsen.

Wait, there is a nightclub on Arch Bridge Road.... or an outdoor festival.

Drug arrest. More happy talk from Congressman Gibson, happy talk 24/7.

The ever popular sex offenders list for Columbia County.

Olana partnership has a new chair person, Richard Sharp. Stephen Clearman, owner of Kinderhook Farm, is on the board. Kinderhook Farm now has a fantastic guest house.

But, this is brilliant. It absolutely wrong for the County to consider relocating any important function out of Hudson proper, right where the county offices are now. Hudson needs more anchors, not to have the legs kicked out from under the city. The city of Hudson was well designed by someone, with Warren and 5th Street making a cross topped by the courthouse and the library, and that great design should remain the anchor for a thriving city. Any other option is wrong on a hundred levels.

More on the dog feces feud in Hudson.

Need a job? How about a summer job? Olana is hiring for the summer. Hit me up for link. Are you an accountant?

Need a school t-shirt/uniform? Ichabod Crane?

Free movie tonight at Chatham’s Crandall Theatre on March 6 at 3 p.m.: Once in Afganistan.

Good at video? Documentary on Hudson is looking for some videographers to contribute.

Blu Dot swap meet?

Problems with transportation costs in Chatham schools. Interesting issues: sending fewer buses, filling the buses up more... I have to think that if the county took over transportation, instead of doing it district by district, we could save a lot of money. It's a math problem: can you save money by consolidating transport? Here is the math.

Intuitively, I suspect a little mathematics, an algorithm, might save millions.

Is this the same plane crash that has been in the news for a few days? Don't think so. That's two planes in a week?

Register reports on... something to do with public school covering health costs of private school students. Either Ichabod Crane is getting ripped off by North Colonie or the other way around. Depends on what services are covered by the state law that requires the payment at issue in the article.

Some members of the school board object to paying for the heath costs for two students who go to a private school in another district, to pay just under $1000 to "North Colonie Central School District for health services for two students living in the Ichabod district who attend St. Pius X School in Loudonville."

So the students go to a private school in North Colonie but live in Ichabod Crane. The school district in which the private school is located charges the home district for "heath services" whether or not the students use the health services.

“If those students attended our schools, we’d provide those services,” the superintendent said.

If the students went to Ichabod Crane, the district would be on the line for much more than $500 per student. That is hardly likely to save any money, getting them to go to the local public school.

Has a private school student ever shown up at any public school nurse's office and demanded services? Anywhere in the whole state of New York: does it happen? Almost certainly not. If there is a state law which suggests it should or could happen, that is bad law.

I think the issue depends on what "health services" mean.

If "health services" means the school nurse, then Ichabod Crane is getting ripped off and the New York law is poorly worded, allowing districts with private schools in them to extort money from the districts that send kids to the private school.

If "health services" includes speech therapy, physical therapy and special education, then North Colonie is getting ripped off by a state law which is trying to remedy a real problem and Ichabod should shut up and pay the money gladly.

So, which is it? Hard to tell from the article cited above.

This cool house just won't stop showing up in my google alerts.

Does Philmont have its own currency?

Please explain this brother Kinderhook?
